ALDERMAN LIBRARY
RENEWAL PROJECT

The renovation of UVA's main library takes one of the University’s historical buildings as a stepping stone to better create a functional atmosphere for studying and research.

The renovation will bring the Library up to current standards of safety, accessibility, and service. More importantly, it will transform into a contemporary library fit with modern amenities to meet the needs of its users.

The Problem

How can the library be modernized within a neoclassical building for undergraduate students? These improvements need to specifically target 6 design elements: spaces, systems, objects, products, graphics, and experiences.

Undergraduate students that were interviewed commonly reported similar needs for a new library. Most notably, they needed lots of light and spaces for individual work

"at night, a lot of the rooms don't have great lighting so its hard to be productive in a place so dark and gloomy"

Different ways of illuminating space were considered to make sure students could productively work in a modernly equipped and aesthetically-pleasing space

"the couches are ripped up and uncomfortable,
overall Alderman is just old and icky"

Adding new furniture that caters to the students' need for a comforting and welcoming environment, while creating both group and individual work spaces.

"when I'm working by myself, I don't like it for it be super duper quiet but not loud either; honestly I find that the sound of coffee machines
work like a white noise machine for me

Undergrads work best under different conditions so its important to have various spaces that cater to appropriate noise levels; having spaces where talking is allowed is necessary for group work, while having rooms or bookshelves to absorb sound from the rest of the library that allows for better concentration for others

"I can't stand the checkerboard floors,
its nauseating and so old-looking "

These color palettes are both modern and inviting as opposed to the current color scheme in Alderman that students reported being as outdated and unwelcoming

The library serves as a place where stakeholders interact among each other and interact with the environment. The emphasis on color, sound, light, and decor create a welcoming place that promotes and helps sustain productivity.

Warm and natural lighting, combined with varied levels of sounds creates varied spaces where any individual can study alone or in a group.

Stakeholders will want to share the positive experience they have had at Alderman and continue to return.
